Psychoanalytic Models of the Mind Part 1 (202) Psychoanalytic Models of the Mind is a two-part course that provides an introduction to the major phases of development in psychoanalytic theory from its origins in the latter part of the 19th century to the present. Part I is a 16-session course that focuses on psychoanalytic theories originating with Sigmund Freud through ego psychology (Anna Freud, Heinz Hartmann, Charles Brenner) and early object relations (Melanie Klein and William Fairbairn). We will follow themes of topography, motivation, structure, and development throughout the course to learn how these theories evolve from, coexist with and inform each other. Prerequisite: Students will need a basic exposure to and understanding of psychoanalytic theory and its application to the treatment of patients. Applicants can meet this requirement through previous coursework, training, or supervision (e.g., Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics; the PPSC Introductory Course; psychoanalytic coursework or supervision in graduate school/residency or post-graduation).
