Description: The course seeks to examine closely the fine-tuned analytic process of one early phase psychoanalytic case. We will explore verbatim notes along transference, countertransference, clarification, interpretation, resistance, linking, dreams, and frame. Two-hour monthly classes will be augmented between classes by ad hoc discussions among the participants and the instructor. In this seminar participants present adult case material. A variety of technical issues related to working with adults in psychoanalysis are discussed.
Target Audience: This course is at the intermediate through advanced level.
Format: This class will combine lecture and seminar formats; student participation is required.
About the Instructor:
Burton Hutto, MD is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who is a Professor of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine. He is Director of the Psychotherapy Clinic for psychiatry residents and Medical Director of the crisis unit of inpatient psychiatry at UNC Hospitals. He is a graduate of the UNC-Duke Psychoanalytic Education Program, now known as the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas. He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas and serves as Director of the Psychoanalysis Program.

Prerequisite: This class is open to matriculated Psychoanalytic Adult or Adult/Child students who have completed all or nearly all of the Core Curriculum at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas. Some exceptions to the requirements that the psychoanalytic student has finished all or almost all of the Core Curriculum may be made by the psychoanalysis program.
Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit on the Psychoanalysis training program. If there is a course assignment, students must complete the assignment to receive training program course credit.
Continuing Education Credit: At the end of the course, participants must complete the evaluation form to receive continuing education credit. The instructor(s) has signed financial disclosure form and has no commercial support that represents a conflict of interest.

Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator
Matriculated students are not charged a course registration fee. Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee. In special circumstances, we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
Course Cancellation Policy
Course Learning Objectives: Class participants will be able to:
- Describe how to assess clinical cases for analyzability.
- Describe how to look for indicators that a client may be ready to move from psychoanalytic psychotherapy into psychoanalysis and how to approach the client about making this change.
- Describe how to recognize and intervene with resistance to free association.
- Discuss how to understand and interpret the meanings of fantasies and dreams.
- Discuss methods to help the analysand reveal or elaborate on the transference.
- Discuss ways of interpreting the meanings of transference.
- Describe methods for recognizing and using countertransference issues.
- Describe the consideration of the quality of one’s interpretations as being experience-near, having continuity, and timeliness.
- Discuss the helpfulness of one’s interventions as observed by changes in the patient’s productivity, affective interactions, or the ability for self-analysis.
- Discuss the analytic process as it evolves in the course of following one analytic case for over five months.
