Description:   Object Relations is the second of a four-part series that provides an introduction to the major phases of development in psychoanalytic theory from its origins in the latter part of the 19th century to the present. Object Relations is an 8-session course that focuses on psychoanalytic theories originating in early object relations.  Theorists discussed will include Sullivan, Fromm, Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, and Bion.  We will explore the shift from Freud's drive/structural model to the relational/structural model that has dominated psychoanalysis over several decades.  We will follow themes of topography, motivation, structure, and development to learn how these theories evolve from, coexist with, and inform each other.

Target Audience: This course is intended for clinicians at beginning through intermediate levels.

Prerequisite: Students will need a basic exposure to and understanding of psychoanalytic theory and its application to the treatment of patients. Applicants can meet this requirement through previous coursework, training, or supervision (e.g., Thinking Psychoanalytically: The Basics; the PPSC Introductory Course; psychoanalytic coursework or supervision in graduate school/residency or post-graduation). Applicants who don't meet this requirement can register for the course with permission of the instructor.

Format: This class will combine lecture and seminar formats; student participation is encouraged. All the PCC courses are small group discussions that require participants to read and synthesize the materials presented.  PCC faculty ensure that gaps in knowledge are addressed.

About the Instructors: 

Steven Bennett, PhD, is a Training and Supervising Analyst and is on the faculty of the PCC.  He is an adjunct Associate Clinical Professor in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. He has been the President of the PCC (2016-2017) and Director of the PCC Training Programs (2013-2015). Steve is a psychologist/psychoanalyst who in 1993 established in Chapel Hill the Center for Psychological and Family Services which has focused on understanding the interrelationship between personal psychodynamics and the influence of spiritual and social values.

Amy Levy, PsyD is a psychoanalytic and forensic psychologist who trained in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. She has published and presented her elaborations on Wilfred Bion’s theories and hysteria, and has a chapter-in-press on adolescent Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the civil legal arena.  Dr. Levy is past chair of the Education Committee for the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology.  Dr. Levy has presented on psychoanalytic group work and has taught courses on psychodynamic theory, assessment, and group therapy at various San Francisco and Los Angeles doctoral programs.  Since moving to North Carolina,  she has continued a clinical and forensic private practice.

Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.  Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.  In special circumstances we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.
