Description:   Psychoanalysis and Psychopharmacology is a twelve-week course. During this course we will learn about the following:

1) the influence psychoanalytic therapy and psychopharmacology have on each other,

2) technical questions that arise when considering integration of the two and

3) the complex interaction between psychoanalysis, psychopharmacology, and society.

 

Target Audience: This course is intended for clinicians who prescribe psychotropic medication and also provide psychotherapy. The course will be taught at an intermediate level. 

Format: This class will combine lecture and seminar formats; student participation is encouraged. All PCC courses incorporate small group discussions which require participants to read and synthesize the materials presented. PCC faculty ensure that gaps in knowledge are addressed.

   

About the Instructor:   Dhipthi Brundage, M.D. is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst practicing in Durham. She is a Consulting Associate at Duke University in the Department of Psychiatry. Her clinical practice entails treating adults in an outpatient setting using psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and medications. Her educational role at Duke involves teaching and supervising psychiatry residents. At Duke, she created and directs the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Practicum where she supervises individual residents in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Prerequisite: Students will need a basic exposure to and understanding of psychoanalytic theory and psychopharmacology, as well as their application to the treatment of patients. Applicants can meet this requirement through previous coursework, training, or supervision. Applicants who do not meet this requirement can register for the course with the permission of the instructor.

Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in the psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis training program. 

Continuing Education Credit: At the end of the course, participants must complete the Evaluation Form to receive continuing education credit. The instructor has signed the Financial Disclosure Form and has no commercial support that represents a conflict of interest.

Registration and Tuition Deadline is February 10.  $25 Registration Fee is due at the time of application.
Tuition: $315
$235 for students matriculated in the PCC training programs 
$290 for residents and graduate students
Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator
Matriculated students are not charged a course registration fee.  Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.  In special circumstances, we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Class participants will be able to:

 

  1. Describe the evolution of thought regarding combined psychoanalytic treatment and psychopharmacology.
  1. Discuss the relevance of psychoanalytic concepts such as transference/countertransference, resistance, defense, unconscious fantasy, transitional objects, and attachment to treatment with psychopharmacology.
  1. Describe the impact, beneficial and problematic, of prescribing medications in the context of a psychoanalytic treatment.
  1. Describe psychoanalytic considerations to account for when prescribing medications.
  1. Discuss the psychoanalytic perspective of a medication management encounter by way of detailed process notes.
  1. Detail psychoanalytic interventions to address dynamic forces at play in a treatment that includes medications.
  1. Discuss reasons to choose split treatment.
