Circle of Security® International has established a video-based parenting education program offering the core components of the evidence-based and internationally acclaimed Circle of Security (COS) protocol. This four day seminar trains professionals to use an eight chapter manual and DVD to educate parents and caregivers. The program presents video examples of secure and problematic parent/child interactions, healthy options in care giving, and animated graphics designed to clarify principles central to COS. Circle of Security® Parenting™ implements decades of attachment research in an accessible step-by-step process for use in group settings, home visitation, or individual counselling. Who Should Attend?


Social Workers, Pediatricians, Early Childhood Educators, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Home Visitors, Family Support Workers, Outreach Workers, Behavior Support Specialists, and anyone providing parenting education and/or counseling to parents of young children.

Cost


$1,000 (includes COS Parenting DVD, COS Parenting Training Manual, Parent Handouts, License to use the above materials to teach COS Parenting to caregivers). This cost (minus a $200 cancellation fee) is refundable through March 10, 2020. After this date it may be only transferred to another person or location.

Scholarships


To encourage participation by North Carolina non-profit organizations serving disadvantaged families with young children, the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas will award grants to selected NC non-profit organizations to cover half ($500) of the cost of tuition for up to two staff members or volunteers from each organization. Organizations must commit to delivering at least two Circle of Security® Parenting™ groups to the community during between April 2020 and March 2021. To apply for a scholarship, download, complete and submit this grant application form by January 24, 2020Scholarship grant applications must be received by January 24, 2020, and will be given on a "first-come" basis to eligible organizations. Please contact Nancy Sowa, PCC Programs Manager, with questions about these scholarships: [email protected].

COSP videos are provided to trained facilitators on DVD and also may be streamed online. These materials may only be used by those who have completed the four day training.  Completion of the four day training does not grant permission to train others in the use of the COSP program.

Are Continuing Credits Available?


The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas designates this program to be eligible for up to 24 CE hours for Licensed Professional Counselors and 24 Category A CE units for psychologists.*Physicians are eligible to receive up to 24 Category 1 credits. Letters of attendance will be provided to all other attendees. See below for details. Instruction will be given at an introductory to intermediate level.

*NOTE: Psychologists must attend all instructional hours each day to receive any CE credit through the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA does not allow giving partial credit. Learning Objectives of the Training
  1. Describe the attachment theory that provides the underpinnings for the Circle of Security® Parenting™ program.
  2. Describe the attachment research that provides the underpinnings for the Circle of Security® Parenting™ program.
  3. Describe and contrast secure and insecure styles of attachment.
  4. Describe and contrast avoidant and ambivalent styles of insecure attachment.
  5. Describe what is meant by disorganized attachment.
  6. Explain the long-term benefits of shifting caregiver focus from behavior management to enhancing the quality of relationship.
  7. Utilize group process and video clips of parent-child interactions to support increased empathy in caregivers.
  8. Explain the concept of reflective functioning.
  9. Describe specific steps to building self-reflection in caregivers.
  10. Utilize the Circle of Security® graphic to explain the concepts of secure base and safe haven.
  11. Utilize the Circle of Security® graphic to explain the parent's role in supporting the child's need to explore the world as well as to receive comfort and protection.
  12. Identify new strategies to use with caregivers to improve the regulation of emotions in their children.
  13. Describe what types of parental behaviors are associated with disorganized attachment in their children.
  14. Describe step-by-step approaches for promoting secure attachment in children.
  15. Utilize reflective questioning to help caregivers compassionately examine their limitations as parents.
  16. Explain the concept of relational rupture and repair.
  17. Describe typical patterns of relational rupture whereby caregivers lose their capacity to be bigger, stronger, wiser and kind.
  18. Describe how parents can use their own internal distress signals (also called "shark music") to identify moments of struggle in meeting their child's attachment needs.
  19. Explain what is meant by co-regulation of emotional experience.
  20. Describe how a child's resiliency may be strengthened by the parental stance of "bigger, strong, wiser and kind."
Continuing Education Credit Information


All participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance once they complete a program evaluation. Social workers may use this certificate to document up to 24 CE hours in all states of the US, except in California, Michigan, and West Virginia.

The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas has been approved by National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6518. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
