Child Integrated Seminar

This is an ongoing Child Seminar that integrates theory and techniques in the treatment of children from birth through late adolescence. Child-Focused and Adult/Child psychoanalytic track students will be expected to participate in this seminar for approximately 33 hours per academic year for a total of 5 years beginning at the time of matriculation into one of these programs and are invited to continue after graduation. The goal is to develop an ongoing intellectual inquiry, an orientation that recognizes that the work is very complex and that ongoing study and collegial support are an integral part of the profession. The seminar will integrate ongoing case students and readings. The literature experiences will allow for exposure to the core literature relevant to these tracks.

Prerequisite: Matriculated in the Child-Focused or combined Adult/Child Psychoanalytic Track and 33 credit hours of the core curriculum or permission of the instructors. Matriculated students with experience seeing children who intend to become child-focused or adult/child analytic candidates may take this seminar with permission. The seminars will be open to non-child analytic candidates on the basis of their readiness to participate at this level with the material.

About the Instructors:  

Dr. Rosenblitt, MD,  is a child and adult psychoanalyst, and the founding Clinical and Executive Director of the Lucy Daniels Center. In August 2019, Dr. Rosenblitt retired from his position of 27 years as Executive and Clinical Director and transitioned into his new role as Director of Medical Services, where he will continue his vital life’s work of serving children and families through in-depth evaluation and treatment. He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas (PCC). He is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the psychoanalytic training program of the PCC and is Past Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute of the Carolinas, now the psychoanalytic training program of the PCC. He has written and lectured extensively on topics related to early childhood development.

Paul Brinich, PhD, trained at the University of Chicago, the Langley  Porter Institute (University of California at San Francisco), the Anna Freud Centre (London), and the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas (Chapel Hill, NC). He is a past president of both the Association for Child Psychoanalysis and the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society. An emeritus professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he has consulted with public elementary schools and the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood (Cary, NC). He served for a decade as a senior editor of the Psychoanalytic Study of the Child. Retired from clinical practice, he consults with clinicians and programs regarding their work with children, adolescents, and adults. He has a special interest in adoptees and their families (biological and adoptive).

John Tisdale, D.Min., is a licensed psychotherapist, an ordained United Methodist minister, and a faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas (PCC), where he graduated as a child and adolescent psychoanalyst. He is the former Associate Executive and Clinical Director at the Lucy Daniels Center in Cary NC, and now is in private practice in Cary and Durham. He completed his Master of Divinity degree at Duke University and his Doctorate of Ministry degree in pastoral counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana. Prior to working with the Lucy Daniels Center, he practiced in Chapel Hill with adults and specialized in the treatment of children, adolescents, and parents. He has also worked in the Juvenile Court as a court counselor and served as pastor of a local church congregation.

Registration and Tuition Deadline deadline is September 6 for Fall and January 8 for Spring 2022.
$25 Registration Fee is due at time of application.
Tuition: $880. $440 is due by one week prior to the first class, and the second payment of $440 is due by one week prior to the first class in January.
Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator
Matriculated students are not charged a course registration fee.  Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.  In special circumstances, we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.

Course Learning Objectives: Class participants will be able to:

1. Describe how to work with a child to help them organize their motivation for analysis.
2. Explain and compare the differences between general and psychoanalytic play therapy techniques.
3. Describe the identification of initial play themes and how to help the child to understand initial play themes as objects of analytic inquiry.
4. Explain how to assist parents in understanding the nature of the psychoanalytic process itself and their role in the work.
5. Describe early parental and child resistances that may develop.
6. Discuss how to best assist parents in helping the child with resistances that develop.
7. Describe the ethical dilemmas of sharing material from a child’s treatment sessions with parents to promote greater parental understanding of the child’s need for treatment.
8. Discuss ethical considerations in deciding whether to work directly with parents’ personal intrapsychic conflicts to support the child’s treatment and parental functioning.
9. Explain how to work with the child to help them deepen motivation for various phases of analysis.
10. Describe how to recognize and work with impulsivity that develops in the analytic situation.
11. Describe how to recognize and work with emerging resistances to unconscious material.
12. Demonstrate ways to help the child deepen play themes.
13. Discuss the various types of transferences and countertransferences that develop in a child analysis both with the child and the child’s parents.
14. Explain the role of action, externalizations, and identifications in the psychoanalysis of children.
15. Describe how to work with parents in the later aspects of the initial phase and/or middle phase.
16. Describe the indicators in the child of the approach of the final phase and who to work with parents during this phase. 
17. Discuss how to transition the child and his/her/their parents during the termination phase.
18. Discuss ethical aspects of the analyst’s role in sharing insight into the child’s psychic life with his/her/their parents.
