Developmental Crises, Part I

There are developmental challenges to be mastered throughout the life cycle. This course, the first in a series of four, will focus, roughly speaking, on infancy, toddlerhood, and early latency. We will utilize a psychoanalytic perspective to explore these intrapsychic and interpersonal developmental tasks and the issues resulting from failure to master them. 

We will consider differing theoretical perspectives using readings from classic and more recent articles. Relevant clinical material will be presented, and class members will have ample opportunity for discussion. 

This course is appropriate for intermediate through advanced students, as well as clinicians with extensive experience who are considering child analytic training and have the permission of the instructor.

Prerequisite:  This class is open to matriculated Psychoanalytic Adult, Adult/Child or Child-Focused students who have completed all or nearly all of the Core Curriculum which must include having completed Growth and Development 1 and 2. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy students and graduates who have completed the Core Curriculum and have at least one intensive case may also take these classes. Other interested students must have the permission of the instructor.

Training Program Credit: Students who successfully complete this course can earn credit in the psychoanalysis training program.

Registration and Tuition Deadline deadline is August 17.  $25 Registration Fee is due at time of application.
Tuition: $315
$235 for students matriculated in the training programs 
$290 for residents and graduate students
Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator

Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.  Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.  In special circumstances, we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.

arning Objectives: Class participants will be able to

1)      Discuss Winnicott’s contributions to the concepts of transitional objects, average expectable environment, and the use of caregivers as objects.

2)      Discuss Winnicott’s concepts about the parent-infant relationship, how the capacity to be alone develops.

3)      Discuss the points of similarities and divergence of psychoanalytic theory and attachment.

4)      Describe the phase of separation-individuation in the early years of life.

5)      Discuss the interactive, object-relational approach reflected by Furman and the challenges of being both present and separate for your toddler.

6)      Discuss the challenges of some of the tasks of toddlerhood including toileting, aggression, defensive measures, and psychic conflicts.

7)      Describe the Oedipal phase and its role in the development of the psychic structure formation and internalization.

8)   Discuss the later stages of the Oedipal stage and its relationship to the development of self.
