Development Across the Life Cycle Part 1B : Latency to Pre-adolescence (206B)

Description: There are developmental challenges to be mastered throughout the life cycle from infancy through old age. Each component builds upon what has gone before as new capacities are integrated into the emerging personality. This course will explore developmental tasks and challenges from a psychoanalytic perspective including both typical features and pathological adaptations.

 

Part IA, 8 sessions in the fall, will focus on the establishment of psychic structures.  We will examine fundamental attachments in infancy to emerging experiences of separation, autonomy, and attempts at mastery into latency. Psychic structures develop within the crucible of profound caregiving experiences.  We will pay close attention to the significance of these experiences in shaping or distorting the structures we are studying.  We encourage lively discussion of readings, sharing of clinical material, and personal experiences.  Students will be asked to carry one of their own patients in mind as they study the material.  Students are required to take Part 1A and 1B in succession.

 

Part IB will continue to build on these developmental concepts. We will explore the developmental tasks beginning at latency and continuing through preadolescence.  Alternatives to a typical developmental path and the results of distortions in various developmental lines going forward are significant aspects of the course. We encourage lively discussion of readings, clinical material, and personal experiences.

Part 2, in the spring of 2022, will be a 16-week course that will continue the study beginning with adolescence through the stages of adulthood to the developmental concerns of the end of life. Part 2 is open to students who completed Part 1A and Part 1B. will be open to those who competed Part IA and 1B.

 

Format: This class will be limited to 10 participants and will combine lecture and seminar formats; student participation is encouraged. All the PCC courses are small group discussions that require participants to read and synthesize the materials presented.  Classes will include discussion of clinical material of both the instructors and the participants PCC faculty ensure that gaps in knowledge are addressed.

Prerequisites: This class is open to non-matriculated students and is a required class for matriculated students in either the Adult, Adult/Child, or Child-Focused Psychoanalytic programs and in the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy program. Non-matriculated students will need a basic exposure to and understanding of psychoanalytic theory and its application to the treatment of patients. Applicants can meet this requirement through previous coursework, training, or supervision (e.g., Thinking Psychoanalytically: the Basics; the PPSC Introductory Course; psychoanalytic coursework or supervision in graduate school/residency or post-graduation). Other students may take this class with the permission of the instructors.

About the Instructor: Nancy T. Livingston, MD is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and supervisor of mental health professionals, in private practice since 1977. She completed her residency in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at Duke Medical Center. Dr. Livingston graduated from the Duke-UNC Psychoanalytic Education Program (now the Psychoanalysis Training Program of the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas). She has been a teaching analyst in this analytic program since 1992 and is an Assistant Clinical Professor on the faculty of the Duke Department of Psychiatry. Payment plans can be arranged with the Administrator

Matriculated students aren't charged a course registration fee.  Students who register for more than one course in a semester pay only one registration fee.  In special circumstances, we may accept registrations after the registration deadline, but there will be an additional $20 late registration fee.

  1. Discuss the challenges of mastering developmental tasks as the child transitions through the oedipal phase.
  2. Describe the development task related to the emergence of the superego, especially in terms of triadic relating. 
  3. Explain some of the tasks of the transition in latency or middle childhood noting its non-linearity. 
  4. Discuss some of the potential impediments in entering into latency.
  5. Describe some of the positive developmental tasks introduced as the child enters school and the potential for negative experiences related to this transition.
  6. Describe some of the challenges in latency that may be related to illness, learning disabilities or psychical impairments.
  7. Describe the developmental tasks introduced as the child enters into pre-adolescence.
  8. Discuss some of the potentially negative experiences that may appear in pre-adolescence.
